The NHS New Medicines Service (NMS) provides extra support from our pharmacists when you start a new medication for a long-term condition. This free NHS service helps ensure you understand how to take your medicine correctly and feel confident about your treatment.

Conditions Covered by the New Medicines Service

NMS is available for patients newly prescribed medicines for:
• Asthma
• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
• Type 2 Diabetes
• Mental health conditions
• High blood pressure (hypertension)
• Blood-thinning medications

How the New Medicines Service Works

• Initial consultation when you collect your medication
• Follow-up review after 1–2 weeks (in person or by phone)
• Final review after 3–4 weeks to address any concerns or side effects

The service is free on the NHS and designed to support safe and effective medicine use.
